“Harry Potter”: Fastest-Selling Book in History

Why did J. K. Rowling‘s “Harry Potter” win the title of "fastest-selling book in history" for several times? The series of “Harry Potter” was translated into 61 languages and distributed in over 200 countries. What creates the legend of “Harry Potter” series? The success of the novel has to do with its connection between reality and imagine, its wide-range readers, and its realization of dream. Rowling connected two parallel worlds closely to make people believe that the magical world Rowling created really existed in our real world. There are two worlds in this novel. One is the ordinary world where non-magical Harry Potter lived with his aunt and uncle. This world is like the real world we live in. The other is the magical world where Harry lived after discovering that he is a wizard at the age of eleven. People who have ever read this novel should know if Harry wants to go to Hogwarts School, he has to take Hogwarts Express in platform9 3/ 4 in King's Cross St....

The Misery of an Ugly Obese Girl

I always think of this misery story when I feel dissatisfied with my appearance. My friend Mary was an ugly obese girl. She had bulging cheeks, extremely big mouth, and short bow legs. Worst of all, her eyes bulged like a frog. When she was young, she was teased by her classmates all the time but she was still happy and optimistic . After growing up, she had to face more and more realities in this competitive society. Gradually, she believed that people who had beautiful appearances lived in a better life, and she forgot that inner beauty was as important as appearances. She still did not care about others’ mocks until many misfortunes happened to her. She was isolated from her colleagues. She worked alone so she always finished her missions late. Therefore, her boss thought that she was irresponsible and commanded her like a servant. This kind of situation happened frequently and was getting worse. One day, the member of her department ignored the important information. This mist...

White Lies

Many people have the following experience. We tell our moms the food she cooks is delicious even though it tastes terrible. We do not want to hurt her feelings because she spends lots of time preparing this meal. Therefore, we tell a white lie.        A White lie is a trivial untruth and harmless fib, especially one told to be tactful or polite, or for some diplomatic reasons. White has always been the color of purity, safety, innocence, cleanliness, and harmlessness. The term using white is to separate it from the darker lies that are told to hide their mistakes, to commit a crime, or to reach an evil purpose.         Most people, even those who insist that they would never tell a lie, have told a white lie. Frequently, a white lie is used in our daily life. For instance, when we get a gift but we do not like it, we still say excitedly: “Thank you very much! I love it.” If we are consid...

The imagery of rebirth in the “Lady Lazarus”

圖片
(Designed by FireduSoleil)           When I first read this poem, I think this is a gloomy and cruel poem which is about Nazi and suicide. The Sylvia Plath’s diction makes me feel absolutely terrified. However, after I read this poem carefully, I see the lights, hopes, and the imagery of rebirth. Therefore, I choose this poem as my topic of final paper because I am extremely curious about this contradiction. I find the imagery of rebirth in this poem by understanding and analyzing Sylvia Plath’s diction. I divide the process of rebirth into four stages. At the first stage, several words such as “lampshade” (line5), “linen” (line9), and “napkin” (line10) connote that she is material. These three materials have a common that they are cloth. I think the reason why she is material is that materials neither birth nor die. Her mind is dead like materials which have no feeling. At the second stage, she has the flesh such as “The nose, the eye pits, the f...

From Conflicts to Reconciliations: Contradictory Mother-Daughter Relationships in Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club

圖片
The Joy Luck Club   written by Amy Tan includes sixteen interwoven stories about conflicts between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters. When the mothers bring their Chinese patriarchal discourses and values to America and impose on their American-born daughters, the severe conflicts occur. From the conflicts to reconciliations, we can see how the mothers relieve from their painful memories, change their values, and reconcile with their daughters; how the daughters free from the conflicts and experience the process of their maturity through explorations of relationships with their mothers, which suggests that every woman who is also a daughter can attain her genuine maturity through sincerely exploring her relationship with her mother. In this novel, the author focuses on mother and daughter relationship so I am going to offer some statements on the mother and daughter bonding. Adrienne Rich analyzed that motherhood is an institution in patriarchy ...

Way of the Peaceful Warrior

圖片
Way of the Peaceful Warrior is a part-fictional, part-autobiographical book based upon the college life of the author Dan Millman. He was arrogant because he was a world-champion athlete. However, gradually, he was haunted by a feeling that something was missing from his life. After he met an old Socrates, and his world was changing from then on. I am deeply influenced by this book. My reflections will be divided into three parts. First, Socrates wrote: "Happiness = Saticfacation/Desires" and he said: "You are rich if you have enough money to satisfy all your desires; or, you cultivate a simple lifestyle of few desires; that way you always have enough money." I have ever heard this kind of words before but it is hard to do. Although reducing our desires is a difficult process, we can be happier if it becomes our habit. Second, "I do not live according to anyone's expectations, not even my own," Socrates said. I am impressed by this word b...
